About Us | UMWELTOS — Project Management
Our story begins in 1993 in Guadalajara, Jalisco.

After a formative trip to Canada, a group of entrepreneurs from Guadalajara encountered pioneering applications of environmental engineering that sparked a vision. That experience revealed an opportunity which, at the time, proved truly disruptive in Jalisco.

The goal was to offer professional environmental consulting and waste collection services in a city where these concepts were only beginning to emerge.

In the early 1990s, Guadalajara had very few companies dedicated to waste management. Most industries did not consider paying for waste disposal, as public services absorbed much of that responsibility. Despite this context, operations began with a single Ford F-350 pickup truck equipped with a hook‑lift system, waste containers, and a clear vision.

From the outset, the objective extended far beyond waste collection. The focus was on driving behavioural change and building a culture of recycling, reuse, and waste reduction.

The industrial sector, known for its high standards and operational rigour, responded positively. Within a short period of time, leading companies in the food, glass, and tool manufacturing industries began collaborating with us to implement pioneering separation and recycling programmes for cardboard, glass, plastics, wood, and other materials.

What was initially perceived as a premature idea evolved into a local movement that required education, professionalisation, and sustained persuasion. Demonstrating the value of waste separation and integrating it into early circular economy processes became essential.

This commitment extended beyond industry and into the community. Training and awareness campaigns were implemented in schools, universities, housing developments, and key markets, particularly Guadalajara’s food and flower markets.

As recycling efforts expanded, significant amounts of materials were collected, glass being a notable case. In response, a strategic decision was made in 2000 to construct a semi‑indusrial glass factory in Zapopan, behind the Metropolitan Park. The facility focused on producing glass bottles for the tequila industry, serving both domestic and United States markets. Although the project was discontinued in 2006 due to high operating costs and technical limitations, it provided valuable operational and strategic lessons.

Meanwhile, industrial waste collection and recovery services continued to consolidate. Reliable processes and consistent service quality positioned the company as one of the three most important waste collection firms in the state of Jalisco.

Between 2000 and 2002, a major technical breakthrough marked a turning point. In collaboration with a plastics engineer, stable reuse processes were developed for vitafilm, a material that posed a serious challenge due to its high generation volumes and lack of recycling alternatives.

The success of this initiative led other companies to replicate the model, giving rise to a regional recovery ecosystem for vitafilm and other recyclable materials.

This advancement accelerated the adoption of industrial recycling and facilitated the implementation of formal integrated waste management systems across multiple sectors. It also strengthened the recycling market itself. What had once been a paid disposal service evolved into a system in which generators of recoverable materials began to receive economic value in return.

One of the company’s most impactful collaborations was with Mexico’s largest glass bottle manufacturer. Together, training and collection programmes were designed for schools, restaurants, and bars. In educational institutions, glass waste was exchanged for school supplies, blackboards, and sports equipment. In bars and restaurants, bottle destruction protocols were implemented to combat the circulation of adulterated beverages. These initiatives combined environmental responsibility with tangible social and public-health benefits.

By 2004, the service offering expanded to include comprehensive waste management solutions, such as the collection of organic waste from markets for compost production and certified fiscal destruction processes.

As the company’s commercial presence grew, its ties with Jalisco’s business sector deepened. To advance Integrated Waste Management across the state, initiatives were launched to connect environmental authorities with industry leaders, fostering dialogue and collaborative solutions to the sector’s challenges.

From 2011 to 2013, the company led the waste collectors section of the Guadalajara Chamber of Commerce. During this period, regulatory initiatives were advanced to curb irregular practices and raise operational standards, fostering greater professionalism and formalization across the sector. At the same time, the company consolidated its role as a convener by organizing a series of events, most notably the annual Environmental Perspectives Forum. This platform brought together academics, students, Mexican and international business leaders, and government authorities at multiple levels to showcase services and technologies and to engage in critical discussions on sustainability.

Over the years, environmental projects were delivered across Mexico, including the western region of Jalisco and Colima, the northern states of Durango and Nuevo León, and the central region encompassing Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Guanajuato, and Querétaro. Each project refined internal standards and strengthened the company’s reputation as a trusted provider of high-quality environmental solutions.

After more than three decades of sustained effort, continuous learning, and resilience, including navigating global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the founding partners decided in 2023 to close this chapter and pursue personal projects. Their legacy endures, as they helped transform environmental management in Jalisco and laid the foundations for a recycling industry where none previously existed.

Environmental Optimisation Services

In 2025, a new chapter begins with UMWELTOS.

UMWELTOS is an acronym derived from the German term Umwelt-Optimierungsservice, meaning Environmental Optimisation Services. The company was formally established in December 2025 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

For both public and private institutions, the greatest challenge in advancing sustainability is not the absence of technology, equipment, or expertise. It is the effective integration and disciplined management of complex environmental projects. While manufacturers, contractors, and specialists are available, persistent gaps remain in project coordination, interdisciplinary collaboration, and execution.

UMWELTOS was created to close that gap.

Its foundation rests on decades of experience in waste management and environmental consulting in Mexico, particularly in the logistics, coordination, and execution of complex operations. This expertise was strengthened through formative professional exposure in Germany, where advanced approaches to environmental systems, process integration, and project discipline were studied and internalized. That knowledge was formalized within UMWELTOS, shaping a methodology for structured, high-impact project delivery.

By positioning itself as a Subject-Matter Expert in Project Management, UMWELTOS ensures sustainability initiatives are executed with rigor and accountability. The company operates as an Environmental Infrastructure and Project Management firm, specializing in the structuring, coordination, and delivery of projects in the water, waste, and energy sectors. Its focus is on translating environmental strategies and technical designs into projects executed with clarity, measurable results, and lasting impact.
